Buckhead Fire Station Falling Apart

Posted: 6:09 pm EDT May 7, 2008Updated: 5:13 am EDT May 8, 2008

If you’re sick, hurt or burning enough to call 911 in north Buckhead, chances are the guys from Station 27 will come and save you.

But neighbors say the Atlanta Fire Station on Northside Drive is falling apart and the city has no money to fix it.

Allison Adair’s family lives across the street and said the Station 27 guys are great. “This fire station does a 5 o’clock story time once a week. They have birthday parties, scout meetings…so not only are they there for our safety but they’re also there for our community,” Adair said.

If you look at the outside of the building, you’ll start to see the 52-year-old building is crumbling. Paint is peeling, window frames are rusting through and some doors and frames are rotting apart.

The worst part? “You can see the exterior is probably the best asset the building has,” said Adair.

A local architect called the inside “a slum.”

A chair blocks an un-useable shower where tiles are crumbling off. A toilet sags off the wall. Roof leaks leave nasty stains and you can see daylight through the ceiling. An exposed air duct is a rat raceway every night – and it’s right over their beds.

Atlanta City Council has no money for people, much less upgrades. So the neighborhood civic association is starting a fundraiser to fix the place up.

City Council Representative Claire Muller is thrilled they’re taking it on. “We’ve talked with lots of neighbors who say they are eager to help,” Muller said.

“It needs a large infusion of cash,” said Adair.
