CORNELIA, Ga. -- The destruction in Polk County is miles from Cornelia in the northeast Georgia foothills.
DIANA DAVIS: Storm-Tossed Photo Travels 130 Miles
When Denise Caudell found a rain-soaked snapshot lying in her driveway Saturday night she didn't give much thought to the picture of a man standing in a pontoon boat."I got to looking on the life preserver and it said Bonnie Jean of Aragon, Georgia," said Caudell. On Sunday morning pictures of the tornado damage and a wrecked Polk County house just north of Aragon were posted on wsbtv.com.A woman named Bonnie Jean Turner was dead; her husband Mike critically injured.Denise and her husband realized the man in their snapshot was Mike Turner; the Bonnie Jean written on the life preserver was his wife; the woman who had died."I couldn't believe that something from that far way could get there in that length of time," said Denise's husband, Wesley Caudell. The wind in Cornelia Saturday night was barely blowing; how had the snapshot made it so far?"I'm still in awe of the whole thing but maybe one day I'll find out what the reason was," said Denise Caudell. The Caudells called the Turners' nephew. He confirmed the man in the picture is his uncle."I told him I was sorry for his aunt passing away and I told him I was going to remember that family in my prayers because they really do need it right now," said Wesley Caudell. The Caudells will mail the photo back to the Turner family Tuesday. They said they're glad they can restore just a bit of so much that was lost.
