Runaway Bride Remembered In New Musical

Posted: 6:56 am EDT March 13, 2008Updated: 12:26 pm EDT March 13, 2008

The story of a Gwinnett County woman who became known as the "Runaway Bride" is the subject of a musical that debuts tonight in the town where the drama unfolded.

  • SLIDESHOW: Runaway Bride Jennifer Wilbanks
  • PURCHASE: Tickets To 'Runaway Bride'
  • The show called "Runaway Bride" is at the 267-seat Red Clay Theatre in Duluth. The theater opened less than two years ago in a remodeled building that was once a church and is owned by the city of Duluth.

It was almost three years ago when then-32-year-old Jennifer Wilbanks disappeared while jogging a few days before her lavish wedding. The Atlanta suburb was turned upside down as her friends and neighbors joined police in the search.

"This play is a celebration of the people of Duluth's efforts during the whole event," Red Clay Theater managing partner Shelly Howard told the Gwinnett Herald. "Theater is all about reproducing life on stage and it is the rare case of a missing person gone good. It presents a real tongue in cheek look at how the media portrayed the whole event."

By the time the missing woman turned up safe in New Mexico, the national media had invested too much effort for the story to simply disappear. So it became the story of the "Runaway Bride."

"No matter how you feel about the event itself, it is my hope that everyone leaves the theater with a smile on their face," said Howard.
