DeKalb County officials said a man was shot by SWAT team members after refusing to drop his weapon during a standoff.

A SWAT team surrounded a house on Cherry Lane in DeKalb County Wednesday morning.

The standoff began around 2 a.m. Wednesday when a neighbor called authorities after seeing a man dragging a woman inside a home at gunpoint. Police believe the suspect is holding his girlfriend hostage inside the home.

Authorities said the woman was able to run away and escape just after 11:30 a.m. and he followed her outside with a weapon. SWAT team members ordered the male suspect to drop his weapon and he did not. Members of the SWAT team shot the suspect. He was critically injured but is expected to be okay.

The female hostage is shaken but okay.

He said if he saw police or the media near the house he would harm the woman. Relatives of the man told officers he is heavily armed.

WSB-TV Channel 2 Reporter Tiffani Reynolds is at the scene and said 10 homes in the neighborhood were evacuated.

Streets in the immediate area were closed off.

Police are not releasing the suspect's name.
