Statement By Markel Hutchins About Lewis Announcement

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

"The people of the 5th District sent John Lewis to Congress over 20 years ago on the promise that he would be a tireless advocate on our behalf; that he would put our needs before special interests and political alliances and that he would heed our voices over the whispers of misguided loyalty. Today's announcement by Rep. Lewis was clearly prompted by political expediency and brought on by a pre-mature endorsement based on political indebtedness.

More than 3 weeks ago, nearly 80 percent of the voters in Georgia's 5th congressional district spoke clairvoyantly about our choice for the democratic presidential nomination. After nearly a month of suggestive posturing, denials, and confusion, it became clear that Congressman Lewis has spent too much time in Washington and too little time listening to his own constituents.

While I am encouraged by news that Mr. Lewis has a chosen to follow the lead of his constituents in supporting the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama as the democratic nominee for President, I remain resolved in my commitment to give the people of the 5th District the representation that they deserve.

Congressman Lewis was correct today when he stated that "Americans are looking for a great change." Our nation is in desperate need of new leadership that will restore America to the promise of our destiny. It is time for a change – it is time to send someone to Congress who is willing to actually represent the district. Mr. Lewis further suggested, "I did it because I felt I had to support Mrs. Clinton because of our friendship." Personal friendship should have absolutely no impact on an elected official's public responsibilities.

I appeal to Congressman Lewis to join me for the debate that Morehouse College students invited us to engage is by letter earlier today. Let's talk about the new leadership required for these new times that is in step with the people of the 5th District of Georgia."
