Officer Accused Of Driving Drunk; Crashing Into Wal-Mart

Posted: 5:17 pm EST February 5, 2008Updated: 8:02 pm EST February 5, 2008

A DeKalb County police officer is on administrative leave after investigators say he was driving drunk and crashed into a Wal-Mart store. One of his fellow officers placed him under arrest and took him to the DeKalb County Jail.

That officer was only in jail for a few hours before posting $1,000 bond all because of a crime it appears he was trying to prevent.

Officer Oliver Dukes spent the last three years sending criminals to the DeKalb County Jail and he certainly didn’t intend to end up there himself. He is charged with driving under the influence after being arrested by one of his fellow officers.

"In this particular case we can't go into detail about the events that transpired that evening because it is part of that ongoing investigation,” said Mekka Parrish with the DeKalb County Police Department.

According to the arrest report, Dukes had a slight odor of alcoholic beverage on him and his eyes were glazed and bloodshot. When police arrived he was asleep behind the wheel of his Ford Explorer. The keys were still in the ignition and the car was still in drive. The front end of the SUV had slammed into the front of a Wal-Mart store.

Sources told Channel 2’s Jodie Fleischer Dukes had been on his way home when he decided to pull over in the empty parking lot to rest.

Wal-Mart would not give Channel 2 its surveillance tape but they are cooperating with police.

"We take every incident involving our officers very seriously, we do understand that officers are human but we must uphold the laws here in DeKalb,” said Parrish.

Dukes was not in uniform or on duty when the crash happened. The concrete wall did not have any major damage.

"We treat every case on an individual basis. Right now this is going through an internal affairs investigation and once that investigation is complete the command staff will take appropriate action,” said Parrish.

Dukes told Channel 2 he did not want to make any comments about the incident. He is on administrative leave with pay pending an internal investigation.
