New Orleans Saints defensive end Charles Grant was stabbed in the neck Saturday night during a fight in Early County.

The veteran is not thought to be seriously injured, however. According to the NFL Network, Grant was stabbed during an incident that also involved the shooting death of a pregnant woman. Grant's connection to the shooting is unknown.

Grant was assaulted and had an injury to his neck, according to a statement released by Capt. Will Caudill of the Early County Sheriff's Office. Grant was transported to Early Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and later released.

Early County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a fight around 1 a.m. Sunday at a nightclub in Blakely, which is about 190 miles southwest of Atlanta.

In the incident, 23-year-old Korynda Reed of Blakely was shot, police said. She was transported to Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala., where she died. Early County Sheriff Jimmie R. Murkerson said Reed was pregnant.

Caudill said there was no known connection between Grant and Reed.

"We believe the altercation began inside one of the nightclubs; it was taken outside. It kind of continued down the street," Caudill said. "It appears Mr. Grant was assaulted, and shortly after several gunshots were fired."

No arrests have been made, and the case remains under investigation.

A jailer said Grant was at the Sheriff's Department Sunday afternoon, but was not under arrest.

WSB-TV has confirmed that Grant left the jail late Sunday afternoon.

Grant is a former University of Georgia football player. He was a three-year letterman and two-year starter at Georgia ending his career with 136 tackles and 15 sacks. As a freshman, he recorded 33 tackles and seven sacks, while also rushing for 79 yards and three touchdowns at fullback. He was a first round pick of the Saints in 2002.

"We are aware of the situation," Saints spokesman Greg Bensel told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "We are still gathering information. We understand that Charles was not seriously injured. It is an unfortunate situation and we will have no further comment until we gather more information."
