North Carolina, Florida Investigators To Interview Hilton

Monday, January 14, 2008 – updated: 6:39 pm EST January 14, 2008

Channel 2 has learned investigators from Florida and North Carolina are meeting in Georgia, preparing to question Gary Michael Hilton about murders in their states. Those investigators are asking for a chance to sit down face-to-face with Hilton. Channel 2 has also learned new information about the evidence police are using to build a case against Hilton in the murder of two North Carolina hikers.

Officials said one of the reasons North Carolina investigators are so interested in Hilton is because the tag on his van at the time he was captured in Georgia, had been stolen out of Transylvania County, North Carolina. That’s the same county where John and Irene Bryant had been hiking when they disappeared and she was murdered.

Two of the 911 callers who helped capture Hilton eventually called in a tag to dispatchers. Both said it was from North Carolina. Sources there confirm it was stolen off a broken down van in Transylvania County. Investigators are still trying to figure out if the timing coincides with the disappearance of the Bryants, who were hiking in the Pisgah National Forest. Irene has been found murdered. John is still missing.

The sheriff in North Carolina tells Channel 2 he is very interested in the bags and boxes of evidence found in the gas station dumpsters in and around Hilton’s van to see if it links back to the Bryant case.

Irene and John Bryant

There have now been Hilton sightings reported in Pisgah National Forest and in Ducktown, Tennessee, where Bryant’s ATM card was used just days before Hilton was spotted a few counties away by an officer in Cherokee County, Georgia. In the coming days, North Carolina investigators want to track Hilton’s whereabouts from October through January and they ultimately hope he will lead them to John Bryant’s body.

The North Carolina sheriff told Channel 2 he has been coordinating with detectives from the murder case in Florida so they could all be in Georgia at the same time. He said depending on how the interview with Hilton goes, there could be organized searches for John Bryant’s body in north Georgia or Tennessee in the coming days.
