TIMELINE: The Search For Meredith

The case of missing hiker Meredith Emerson has gained national attention. Here's a timeline of major turning points.

  • New Years Day -- Meredith Emerson headed to Vogel State Park with her dog.

  • Wednesday 1/2: Authorities launched a search. Her boyfriend found her car the same day.

  • Thursday 1/3: Authorities announced they wanted to talk to Gary Hilton, a person of interest.

  • Friday 1/4: DeKalb County police took Hilton into custody. Emerson's dog, Ella, wandered into a grocery store in Forsyth County.

  • Monday 1/7: Gary Hilton appeared in court and was denied bond. Meredith Emerson's body was found in a wooded area of Dawson State Forest after Hilton led authorities to her body, GBI officials announced.

  • Tuesday 1/8: An autopsy revealed Emerson died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head. In a shocking revelation Dr. Kris Sperry indicated that after Emerson received the lethal injuries, she was decapitated.
