Vandals Smash Gwinnett Holiday Decorations

Posted: 6:06 am EST December 10, 2007Updated: 7:07 am EST December 10, 2007

Vandals went on a weekend spree in a Gwinnett County neighborhood, smashing Christmas decorations, spray-painting cars, egging houses and painting obscene messages on garage doors.

"I take pride in decorating my home for the holidays," said Kathleen Carey of Lawrenceville's Brook Forrest subdivision. "I spend a lot of time and a lot of money on it. And to have somebody come in and do this, it really hurts me."

The vandals damaged decorations on front lawns and on homes; cutting electrical lines to some displays.

They targeted vehicles left parked in driveways; covering some in graffiti. Obscenities were scrawled across both vehicles and garage doors.

The crudely drawn messages included racial slurs and swaztikas.

Basketball goals were toppled up and down the neighborhood of large homes.

"After getting upset now I'm just mad," said homeowner Paula Hastings. "Now we've gone to stage three where we've taken action."

The homeowner's association offered a $1,400 reward for information on the vandalism.

Police said they plan extra patrols in the subdivision.
