BUFORD, Ga. -- Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say recent tests indicate Lake Lanier has a greater supply of drinking water than previously reported.

The Corps conducted tests over the weekend that show the lake has a 280-day supply of usable water. The tests were done on 10 inactive pools in the lake.

The so-called "dead pools" are made up of 115 feet of water directly below the conservation pools.

The Corps' Pat Taylor says the tests show the water quality if "pretty good." He says the water in the dead pools will require minimum treatment to make it suitable for drinking.
