GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Gwinnett County officials are warning everyone to watch out for snakes after a woman was bitten at a local park. The woman was taking a walk on a trail at Little Mulberry Park on Fence road in Dacula when she was bitten.Park visitors said they had seen snakes before but they were shocked to hear that one went on the attack.Charlene Lyles often takes walks with her son at Little Mulberry Park. She said she'd seen a snake once before and since then, she always takes precautions."Usually I'm scanning the trail anyway. I think that's just common safety sense when you're out in the woods," said Lyles."They cross to go down to the lake. Anywhere you have water, you're going to have a snake or two," said trail user Karen Hardeman.Wednesday it was about dusk when a snake latched on the leg of a woman pushing her child in a stroller. Gwinnett Fire officials said the snake eventually fled into a nearby water source after the woman beat it off her leg. When paramedics arrived, her leg was swelling but she was conscious, alert and breathing.Right now, it's unclear if the snake was poisonous. Fire officials said snake bites were not something they dealt with often."We're sharing that space with wildlife. That time of night, snakes tend to feed at that time so again, realizing that and watching out for those possibilities, just stay alert to your surroundings," said Lt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett County Fire Department.Experts said snakes generally will not attack unless they are bothered. Officials said if you happen to be out at dusk, carry a flashlight and be on the lookout.
