Bidding On Vick Apology Reaches $10,000

Posted: 8:56 am EDT September 5, 2007Updated: 6:29 am EDT September 6, 2007

The bidding on the notes Michael Vick used for his public apology for dogfighting reached $10,000 Thursday.

The notes are being auctioned off by the Humane Society of the U.S. on eBay. So far 76 bids have been submitted. The bidding ends on September 14.

"I don’t know if these words were written by Vick himself, or one of his lawyers or PR advisers," said Humane Society president and CEO Wayne Pacelle in a statement on the organization's web site.

Pacelle said the handwritten notes were picked up from the podium at the Omni Hotel by one of their employees after Vick made his statement.

"I do know that they were written in the first person, and they spell out his case to the public—the best he could muster after lying about his involvement in the dogfighting operation, then being exposed for what was his long and barbaric past of abusing dogs, and then finally fessing up after his co-defendants flipped and lawmen were about to put him away for a long time," Pacelle adds.

They appear to be talking points, numbered from one to six. They are written on stationery from the hotel.

Number one says "Apologize for what I've done."

The second says "Apologize Commissioner, AB (Arthur Blank), (Falcons head coach Bobby) Petrino." The words "Ashamed, Dissapointed" are also part of number two. The misspellings are in the note.

Point three says "Young kids." Then "I acted immature."

Point four lists "Forgiveness + Understanding."

In point five Vick reminds himself to "Take Full Responsibility For My Actions."

The last point says "We all make mistakes." Then adds "I've made mistakes in judement."

In the corner of the note someone scribbled "Dogs have suffered."

During the public statement that came just after he entered a guilty plea in federal court last month Vick stuck to his talking points.

"I made a mistake of using bad judgment and making bad decisions. Those things just can't happen. Dogfighting is a terrible thing, and I do reject it," he said.

He singled out NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Blank, coach Bobby Petrino and his teammates for personal apologies, saying "I was not honest and forthright in our discussions."

He also apologized to "all the young kids out there for my immature acts and what I did -- and what I did was very immature. So that means I need to grow up."

"I totally ask for forgiveness and understanding as I move forward to bettering Michael Vick the person, not the football player," he said.

He concluded by saying, "I offer my deepest apologies to everyone. And I will redeem myself. I have to."

He did not mention any dogs during his statement.

His sentencing is set for December 10.
