3-Day Weekend: Escape To Ritz, Reynolds Plantation

Posted: 12:41 pm EDT August 27, 2007Updated: 3:59 pm EST January 21, 2009

Golfing for the guys, massages for the girls and the beach for the kids. Normally a vacation featuring all three would require a five-hour drive to the coast. That's not the case anymore. All three can be found just a hour and a half from Atlanta.

If you're looking for a great getaway, Reynolds Plantation just off Interstate 20 in Greensboro might be the perfect spot.

Reynolds Plantation features a 19,000-acre lake, 99 holes of golf, a world-class spa, plenty of activities for the kids and a Ritz-Carlton property.

The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation is the centerpiece of a vacation here. Conde Nast Traveler's 2006 Gold List ranked the property among the "World's Best Places To Stay." Perched atop the shores of Lake Oconee, it features 35 acres of waterfront property. Highlights of a stay here include the Chiminea Dining Experience where guests can dine lakeside in Adirondack chairs with their personal chiminea lighting the night sky and the Bar-B-Que Butler service. If kids are making the trip, the resort features a kids program that includes nature walks, scavenger hunts and plenty of water sports.

The infinity pool hits the spot for kids and adults alike. The pool sits just atop Lake Oconee. There you can relax and spend the day soaking in the sun or enjoying a good book.

When most people mention Reynolds Plantation, golf comes to mind. It's no wonder. Reynolds features 99 holes of golf designed by some of the biggest names in the industry. Course architects include Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio and Rees Jones. Virtually every golf rankings list Reynolds at or near the top when it comes to world-class golf destinations. The Zagat Survey ranked Reynolds as the best golf resort in the country in 2004, tied with Pebble Beach, Whistling Straits and Pinehurst. Conde Nest Traveler selected Reynolds Plantation as 5th in their choices for the "Top 100 Golf Resorts" in North America, the Caribbean and the Atlantic, Ireland and Scotland.

The Oconee Course at Reynolds will play host to the 23rd PGA Cup Sept. 21-23. The tournament is similar to the Ryder Cup in that a team of 10 U.S. PGA Pros will square off against a team from Great Britain and Ireland.

If your game needs a little work, stop by the TaylorMade Performance Lab. The Lab features one of Golf Magazine's "Top 100 Teachers" in Charlie King. Have King point out your problems then have your swing monitored by Motion Analysis Technology. If these two things don't improve your swing, nothing will.

While the guys hit the greens, the ladies certainly can join in. The Oconee Course was recently named as the fifth best course when "Golf For Women" selected their "50 Best Courses For Women." The remaining courses offer a challenge to women and men alike. If they opt for something a little more relaxing, the 26,000 square foot spa at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation is a possibility. Word has it, don't miss the Prada spa treatment.

While Lake Oconee provides the backdrop for many of the 99 holes of golf and for the Ritz, it offers plenty of activities as well. Boating, fishing, kayaking and skiing are all available at the lake.

The best thing about Reynolds though may be its distance from Atlanta. As Steven Freund, the General Manager from the Ritz-Carlton Lodge put it, a three-day visit here is a three-day visit. Reynolds is only a hour and a half drive from most parts of the metro area. A visit doesn't require a six-hour car ride.
