Barbie Bandit Pleads Guilty In Bank Heist

One of the so-called "Barbie Bandits" pleaded guilty in Cobb County Superior Court Wednesday to charges relating to a bank heist.

Heather Johnston, 19, pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft and no contest to a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge in connection with the heist in February.

She will remain free on bond, although she will have to wear an ankle bracelet.

Judge Mary Staley postponed sentencing until the cases against three co-defendants are resolved.

Johnston's attorney, Clay Thompson, says he and Johnston have been working with the district attorney's office about entering a plea since she left jail.

Johnston's father told WSB-TV Channel 2 Johnston is a different person since her arrest.

Guilty Plea in Barbie Bandit Case

Since all this happened and we've gotten Heather back we are a happy family; playing tennis together, going to church together," said Ed Johnston.

"It's almost like when she finally did get caught she said 'I need a life change,'" said Clay Thompson, Johnston's defense attorney.

Her trial was scheduled to begin October 10.

District Attorney Pat Head says Johnston's plea was not negotiated with his office and he did not question the timing of her decision.

Authorities say Johnston and Ashely Miller were part of a bank theft in which nearly $11,000 was taken. Miller is charged with felony theft by taking, marijuana possession and ecstasy trafficking.

The theft occurred February 27 at the Bank of America service center at a Kroger store in Acworth. Surveillance cameras recorded the two teens wearing sunglasses and smiling as they handed a teller a note demanding cash.

Authorities also arrested two men in the case they say were involved in the case.
