Braves Manager's Meltdown Is Internet Sensation

Mississippi Braves manager Phillip Wellman has turned into an Internet star.

  • SLIDESHOW: Manager's Meltdown
  • Video of his meltdown during a weekend game against the Chattanooga Lookouts is showing up web sites around the world.

Wellman got into an argument with home plate umpire Brent Rice over balls and strikes.

Things escalated with the speed of a fast ball.

Wellman tossed his hat and got face to face with Rice. Pretty typical baseball argument stuff.

    But then Wellman got creative.

He used his spikes to pile dirt on home plate. Then he got down on his hands and knees to make sure the plate was completely covered. He drew a new plate on his dusty canvas.

Wellman raced up the third base line to argue with the third base umpire. Getting no satisfaction there, he turned into a base stealer. He pulled up third base, stormed off and threw it into the outfield behind second base.

Turning towards home he spotted Rice again and dropped to his stomach. He started crawling towards the pitcher's mound like he was behind enemy lines.

Wellman picked up the rosin bag and tossed it like a hand grenade, letting it plop at the umpire's feet.

Finally, escorted by a member of the grounds crew he exited the field, blowing kisses to the booing crowd.
