Teacher Accused Of Bullying Students

Posted: 5:08 pm EDT May 29, 2007Updated: 5:51 pm EDT May 29, 2007

The Cobb County school system is under fire by a group of parents who claim it ignored a teacher who bullied students for years.

The McCleskey Middle School parents have uncovered three decades of complaints by parents and teachers against math teacher Sally Asnip. But they said they’re even angrier the state did nothing about the complaints.

“She constantly harassed her, followed her, she was trying to intimidate her,” said parent Kathleen Angelucci.

Angelucci was talking about her daughter, allegedly being bullied by a middle school instructor.

“It’s one thing to guide a child, we all do it, but its another thing to physically hurt a child to get them to do something you want,” said Angelucci.

It worried her so much she told other parents, who told her the bullying was a pattern.

“I found, unfortunately, 30 years, from 1977 until 2007, outcries from parents, ‘Please do something about this teacher.’ I saw letters in her file, teachers approaching her, but nothing ever being done,” said parent Cyndie Westrich.

Channel 2 checked and Asnip’s personnel file is loaded with complaints from parents and teachers stating that her tactics are clearly unacceptable, including, “pushing kids against the wall.”

A letter from Ms. Asnip’s assistant principal states, “We’re tired of covering for you and making excuses for you.” It’s signed by Dell Loyd in February of 1990.

“Come on, 30 years working in the school system, with 30 years of complaints like this with only 1 day’s suspension? Come on. Our kids get worse than that,” said Westrich.

Asnip declined comment.

On at least three occasions, parents or other reporters have reported Asnip's actions to the Department of Family and Children Services. In every case, DFCS said it was not a family issue and they sent it to the Cobb County school system to investigate. In each of those cases, Cobb County schools decided Asnip had not done anything wrong.

Asnip is retiring. Her last day is Wednesday.
