Teacher Accused Of Sex With Student

A DeKalb County civics teacher is out on bond after being accused of having sex with and providing alcohol to a 17-year-old student.

Twenty-eight-year-old Clarence Hicks was arrested Sunday, but school officials and police are tight-lipped on the circumstances.

Officials with DeKalb’s Miller Grove High School were quick to keep cameras away from school grounds. But parents want to know why Clarence Hicks was allegedly able to have sex with a student.

“It’s insane! It’s like, okay, is he not watching the news that people go to jail for having relationships with minors and from what I’ve heard, she was of legal age, but still, she was a kid, come on,” said parent Cordelia Gaddie.

According to the booking sheet, Hicks is not only accused of sexual assault on a person in his custody, but with providing the 17-year-old female with alcohol.

“Somebody in that position should know better,” said Hicks’ neighbor Tyanne Bridges.

People in Hicks’ Lithonia neighborhood, tell Channel 2 the teacher is quiet and keeps to himself.

“I didn’t even hear anything about it. I was in the house all weekend, so it’s just amazing what happens in your neighborhood,” said Bridges.

According to the school’s web site, Hicks taught civics and world geography, but he previously taught school in Marion County, Florida. Now parents want to know if something happened down there.

“Yeah, are we checking the background of these people who are watching over our kids? Because this is too much,” said Jerry Gaddie.
