Students at Central High School in Carroll County are mourning the loss of a friend and star athlete. J.C. Ferrel was killed in a car accident Monday night on his way home from work.

Officials say John Ferrel – who went by J.C. – was killed on Highway 166 in Bowden Monday night when his car apparently hydroplaned.

J.C., a 17-year-old junior at Central High, was also a honor student and was featured this past weekend in the local newspaper for winning a wrestling match.

“(We are) very stunned and grief-stricken today. It’s been very quiet and sad,” said Principal Gail Stewart.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes are holding a vigil to honor J.C. Tuesday night at the school.
