KENNESAW -- "Spaceship Earth" has crashed back to earth."Spaceship Earth‚" a 175-ton circular sculpture unveiled in late October in front of Kennesaw State University's new Social Sciences Building, collapsed last Thursday during the school's holiday break. No one was injured during the mishap, and the structure has been cordoned off to limit access to the area. The sculpture is the work of Finno-American artist Eino. School officials estimate it's worth $1 million.Water damage and inadequate adhesives are being blamed for the collapse of the sphere.Officials at Kennesaw State say the artwork is insured and will be rebuilt. The massive design consists of a 15-foot-diameter sphere comprised of 88 separate pieces of Brazilian blue quartzite‚ and 2‚400 bronze pieces attached to the face of the 22-foot-high globe. A life-size bronze figure of environmentalist David Brower also is stationed near the apex.Spaceship Earth was commissioned by Jennifer and Brian Maxwell, creators of the PowerBar, as a tribute to Brower, noted environmentalist, who died in 2000. Unfortunately, Brian Maxwell did not live long enough to see the tribute come to fruition‚ as he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in 2004.
