No Heat For Three Local Colleges

Posted: 5:10 pm EST December 7, 2006Updated: 5:59 pm EST December 7, 2006

As the temperatures take a dive, students at Clark Atlanta University, Spelman and Morehouse Colleges are dealing with no hot water and no heat – and they’ve been dealing with the situation for days.

This is not when you want a boiler to go out – school officials say right now the broken boiler is working but not at full capacity – so the water may get warm but not for long.

“To me it’s almost like I haven’t showered in 3 days. I’m a girl so I like to shower everyday – I like to be clean,” says student Asia Curry.

Asia along with her twin sister, Sasha, are students at Spelman College. They haven’t showered on campus for several days because there hasn’t been any hot water or heat.

“Some of my friends are washing in cold water,” says Sasha.

School officials at Clark Atlanta University say a steam boiler broke at CAU’s power plant that provides hot water and heat to 13 buildings on campus – including 4 residence halls. This affects more than 300 students at Spelman, CAU and Morehouse.

“They need to hurry up and fix the boiler – we pay a lot of money to go here,” says Sasha.

“We are bringing in temporary heating equipment that will be used to heat the buildings and residence halls,” said Michael Lacour with Clark Management Services.

Officials know temperatures will dip into the 20’s or even lower and are doing all they can for more hot water and heat.

“The administration can go home and take a shower and have heat – and we’re stuck here on campus,” says Sasha.

School officials plan to bring in heaters and they will make room in the student center that has heat and hot water for students to come and sleep overnight. They are also making accommodations for students with special needs. They hope to have a replacement boiler by next week.
