Posted: 6:18 am EST November 6, 2006Updated: 1:13 pm EST November 6, 2006

A woman stabbed a man to death after he broke into her home and tried to assault her, Cherokee County officials said.

The man broke into the home Sunday night and tried to rape the woman, authorities said. But the woman fought back.

Deputies arrived around 9 p.m. to find the man dead. The woman was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta with serious injuries.

Officials say the victim apparently knew her attacker in high school and they had recently become re-acquainted. Authorities say they do not believe the victim and her attacker were romantically involved, though.

Officials also say much of the attack was witnessed by the victim's young daughter.
