Metro Woman Uses Oprah Money To "Pay It Forward"

Posted: 4:07 pm EST November 1, 2006Updated: 4:05 pm EST November 27, 2006

A Cobb County woman is on a mission for the Oprah Winfrey Show. Melanie Duckworth was in the audience Monday when Oprah gave each member of the audience $1,000 and challenged them to pay it forward.

Melanie Duckworth had to videotape her efforts to give $1,000 Oprah-furnished dollars to a deserving person.

“Everybody wants to do something to help, and that was the real mission behind Oprah’s Pay It Forward Challenge,” said Duckworth.

Winfrey gave 300 people in the audience each $1,000 and a video camera to document their search for a deserving recipient.

Duckworth found her Pay It Forward person at the Georgia Medical Institute.

Julie Sieber is a massage therapy student and did not know the Oprah missionary had picked her – she thought Channel 2 cameras were there to do a story on massage therapy.

A single mother of a 2-year-old, Sieber is in school for 6 hours every day and she also works a full-time job at Target.

“It’s tough, but I keep telling myself it’s gonna be worth it in the long run,” said Sieber.

In about 2 months, Julie will graduate from massage therapy class and have the opportunity to go out and make between $30,000 and $40,000 a year.

“We went ahead and purchased $200 gift cards for her,” said Georgia Medical Institute president Liana Lusson.

Lusson, Target and others are adding to the surprise gifts for Sieber.

Sieber will leave her class to pick up her son at a day care center. That’s when Oprah-missionary Duckworth plans to surprise her and pay it forward.

You can watch the Oprah Winfrey show every weekday at 4 p.m. on Channel 2.
