Authorities went to a Spalding County high school campus to arrest a teacher on forgery charges. That teacher now faces felony charges after officers say they found illegal drugs in her possession.

There were warrants for Michelle Butterfield’s arrest out of Upson County – but she lives and works in Griffin.

Upson County officers and state Drug Narcotic Task Force agents were looking for her on forgery and fraudulent attempt to obtain a prescription charges.

They found her at Griffin High School – where she is a 10th and 11th grade English teacher.

Authorities called her to the office and that’s where she was arrested. When they checked Butterfield’s belongings, officers say they found a prescription bottle with no label.

“And it had several Lortabs, Vicodins, Oxycontins – several of those pills in there – which led her to be charged by the City of Griffin with possession of a scheduled three narcotic,” said Felita Morgan with the Griffin Police Department.

That is a felony offense.

So in addition to the Upson County charges, Butterfield faces a drug possession charge in Griffin.

Channel 2 asked the school for a comment and all the district would say was Butterfield has been suspended with pay and there is an internal investigation into the criminal charges.

Butterfield is being held at the Spalding County Jail.
