Castilla Back For Third Stint In Colorado

Posted: 4:33 pm EDT August 14, 2006

(Sports Network) - The Colorado Rockies have agreed to terms with infielder Vinny Castilla on a minor league contract.

This will be Castilla's third go-around with Colorado, where he was a member of the Rockies' 1995 wild card team. He also hit 40 home runs in three straight seasons for Colorado from 1996-98.

Castilla's first stint with Colorado came 1993-99. He also played for the Rockies in 2004, when he clubbed 35 homers and drove in 131 runs.

"Vinny is a veteran player and we believe he can help our club win," Rockies executive vice president and general manager Dan ODowd said. "He will be an asset for our club over the final month of the season, both on the field and in the clubhouse."

The 39-year-old Castilla will work out with the Rockies for the remainder of their current seven-game homestand. Castilla will then report to Triple-A Colorado Springs and he is expected to join the Rockies when rosters expand in September. Castilla will remain in the organization in an undisclosed capacity after his career ends.

"In the brief history of our franchise, few players have endeared themselves to Rockies fans as much as Vinny," Rockies president Keli McGregor said. "Vinny and his family have lived in the area and been a part of our community for several years now. We are very excited that he will remain with the organization when his playing days are over, and he can continue to have a positive impact in the community."

Castilla is among Colorado's all-time leaders in several categories and was named to the NL All-Star team in both 1995 and 1998. He became the only Rockie to start every game in a season that year, and he set the National League record for most RBI by a third baseman with 144.

The Oaxaca, Mexico native has the most home runs (319), hits (900), RBI (1,101), and doubles (349) of any player born in Mexico in major league history.

In 72 games for the Padres this season, Castilla hit .232 with four home runs and 23 RBI before being released on July 21.
