Mother Of Phils Manager Manuel Dies

Friday, October 10, 2008

(Sports Network) - Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was unable to attend Friday's media briefing prior to Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers after learning of the death of his mother.

Manuel, though, was in the dugout for the Phillies' 8-5 win later in the day.

"The Phillies organization is saddened by the news of the death of June Manuel, the mother of our manager," said David Montgomery, the Phillies president and CEO. "Our hearts go out to Charlie and the Manuel family at this most difficult time. Mrs. Manuel instilled the qualities of hard work, loyalty and a caring good nature that we have come to respect and appreciate from our manager and friend."

After the game, Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino found out that his grandmother had passed away.

Philadelphia leads the best-of-seven series two games to none.
