Red Sox 3B Lowell Off Active Roster
Tuesday, October 7, 2008
Boston, MA -- (Sports Network) - Boston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell's torn labrum in his right hip forced the team to take him off the ALDS roster, making him ineligible for Game 4 against the Angels and for the ALCS.Boston wrapped up its five-game series against the Angels in dramatic fashion on Monday, taking Game 4 by a 3-2 decision on Jed Lowrie's ninth-inning RBI single. Lowell, however, will not be available for the Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, which starts in St. Petersburg on Friday. Lowell, who was hitless in eight at-bats in the series, missed Game 2 due to the hip condition. He has been hampered for the past few months, and recorded just one at-bat in Boston's final 11 regular season games. In 113 games in the 2008 regular season, Lowell hit .274 with 17 homers and 73 RBI, the lowest marks he has posted in each category since coming over from the Marlins in the trade that also brought Josh Beckett to Boston. Replacing the third baseman on the roster is infielder Gil Velazquez, who did not play in Monday's Game 4 against Los Angeles. Velazquez's contract was purchased from Triple-A Pawtucket on September 25, and he was 1-for-8 with an RBI in three regular season games for Boston.
