Rays Aim To Continue Home Dominance Against Jays
(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays will try to continue their dominance at home, as they wrap up a three-game set with Toronto Blue Jays today at Tropicana Field. The Rays own one of the best home records in baseball at 38-14 and they have won seven of their last eight games at Tropicana Field, including a 6-4 triumph last night. Matt Garza was nearly unhittable over 7 2/3 shutout innings, Evan Longoria hit the first grand slam of his career and the Rays barely avoided a collapse in the ninth inning to hold for the win on Saturday. Garza (8-5) allowed just two hits, striking out six and walking none. The Rays have rebounded after the All-Star break, winning two straight after ending the first half on a seven-game slide. Cliff Floyd belted a solo homer, while Carlos Pena knocked in a run and scored a run. The Rays allowed Toronto to score four runs in the ninth, but Dan Wheeler averted disaster by retiring Scott Rolen on a pop-up with two outs to pick up his fourth save. Marco Scutaro went 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs for the Blue Jays, who have lost three of four overall. Rod Barajas and Lyle Overbay drove in a run apiece, while Joe Inglett doubled and scored. Roy Halladay (11-7) was brilliant through five innings before imploding in the sixth. Halladay was charged with five runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking three as he had a three-start win streak snapped. Behind the arm of John Parrish today, the Blue Jays will try to avoid being swept by Tampa Bay for the second time this season. The left-hander, who is filling in for injured starters Shaun Marcum and Dustin McGowan, has made two starts this season, winning both of them. Parrish last took to the mound on July 10th, when he limited the Baltimore Orioles to three earned runs and six hits over seven innings. He stuck out three and walked two, but did not receive a decision in an eventual 6-5 win by Toronto. In 15 career appearances, one start, against Tampa Bay, Parrish is a level 2-2 with a 3.71 ERA. Countering for the Rays will be Edwin Jackson, who has allowed just two earned runs in two starts in July. In his last showing, the right-hander yielded just one earned run and six hits over 6 1/3 innings of work against the New York Yankees on July 9th. He fanned three and walked two, but did not earn a decision in the Rays' 2-1 setback in 10 innings. At home this season, Jackson owns a 3-4 record with a 4.09 ERA in 10 starts. He is 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 career appearances, six starts, against Toronto and that includes an impressive outing on May 8th at the Rogers Centre. In that game, Jackson tossed eight scoreless innings, but once again was kept out of the win column. Tampa Bay captured an 8-3 win in 13 innings. This series is the Blue Jays' first visit to Tropicana Field this season. The AL East foes did play a three-game series in Orlando back in April, with the Rays sweeping the set. Tampa Bay also took two of three tests from the Jays in Toronto from May 6-8.
