Facebook bans ads on gun holsters and weapon accessories to minors

Facebook will stop advertising gun accessories to minors starting June 21.

The restrictions focus on ads promoting weapon accessories such as gun holsters, scopes and mounted flashlights for firearms. Those ads will still be allowed on the social media platform, but only to users who are 18 years and older.

Facebook already prohibits ads for weapon sales and modifications such as magazines.

The new policy follows school shootings in Santa Fe, Texas and Parkland, Florida.

A Facebook spokesperson provided this statement to All The Moms:

"We are continuously evaluating if our policies are in the right place — this goes for both our Community Standards and Advertising Policies, and we make frequent updates. We have higher standards for ads because they receive paid distribution, which is why we have chosen to limit ads for weapons accessories to an adults-only audience."

In 2016, Facebook banned private gun sales. The social media giant already stopped the advertising of guns and gun modifications, including silencers.
