BOSTON -- A baby harp seal Tuesday made its way farther than most seals ever even try -- the Boston suburbs.

Baby Seal Ends Up In Boston Suburbs

The animal -- native to the Canadian Arctic -- waddled out of a river in Middleboro, Mass., and wandered into someone's front yard, reported Boston TV station WCVB. The 32-pound seal swam about 25 miles from Mount Hope Bay up the Taunton River.

"They do find them up in the Taunton River sometimes following the herring. This animal really got its way up into the small brook and then came out of the brook and traveled a little less than a quarter mile into someone's front yard and was sleeping in the front yard," New England Aquarium spokeswoman Belinda Rubinstein said.

Student Sarah Newton thought the animal's travels were pretty remarkable.

"I think it was cool. I've never seen a seal in (real) life. I've only seen them in pictures. To know that they came through the brook near my house is pretty cool. It must have been a bumpy ride," Newton said.

The animal will be taken to University of New England's marine science center in Biddeford, Maine, for rehabilitation and release.
