MIAMI -- Doctors say they're getting some calls from worried patients about a possible Botox scare in South Florida.
Four people have been hospitalized for suspected botulism poisoining after getting injections, but officials say it's not clear whether they got Botox or some other substance. Fort Lauderdale plastic surgeon Hal Michael Bass said callers are very concerned, asking about the safety of Botox. Bass said Botox has a proven safety record as a wrinkle remover, but that cheaper products or improper techniques can raise safety issues. The Oakland Park clinic where the injections were given is closed, and state and federal investigations are under way. Botulism is a dangerous paralytic disease. Botox is a highly refined derivative of the toxin that causes botulism. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002 as a wrinkle reducer.Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, says it conducted an internal review and is confident of the safety of its product. It says public health authorities are focusing their investigation on inappropriate and unlicensed practices at the Florida facility.Allergan says physicians and consumers with questions can call (800) 433-8871 to speak to a company representative. The company says consumers can find a physician trained to inject Botox at BotoxCosmetic.com.
