12 Henry Co. Swine Flu Cases Linked To 1 School

Georgia health officials are now investigating a positive link between 12 Henry County cases of swine flu, calling the cases "a cluster.”

Channel 2 Action News reporter Jodie Fleischer said the cases are centered around Eagle's Landing Christian Academy, a private school in McDonough. The school said it has no plans to close.

Fleischer said at least two of the confirmed cases in Henry County are actually students at the school, and now the state health department said all of the 12 cases in this county can somehow be connected to students at the school or their family members.

"Our bottom line is we just trust the lord with it," said one woman.

As students and their families left the school Wednesday afternoon, most said they weren't worried about the 12 swine flu cases connected to their school.

"It's pretty much the same as the regular flu," said fourth grader Ali Austin

Initial contact started with a field trip out of state. Some of the kids got sick and then so did their family members. The kids range in age from 6 to 15 years old and there is one adult. The health department has asked the school to sanitize the building thoroughly every night.

"Now in the lunch room … and in a bunch of places … we have bottles of hand sanitizer and all over the school," said Austin.

The health department is urging any sick students to stay home for seven days from when the symptoms start, and a full 24 hours after the symptoms end. But experts say healthy kids have no reason to worry.

"We believe their kids should go to school. Again, it's not a cause for panic. This is just like the seasonal influenza," said Epidemiologist David Lankford.
