Going Green Georgia

RECYCLING
In 2006, Georgians disposed of 14.8 million tons of garbage. Every year Georgians spend about $100 million to dispose of gabage, which actually contains 2.7 million tons of recyclables. The recyclable materials we throw away every day are worth an estimated $280 million annually to the Georgia-based manufacturers who cannot get enough of the raw material they need.

Recycling cuts down on the materials being disposed in landfills and lowers the need to commit even more natural resources to product manufacturing. Many of today's products create special problems for disposal. Computers, refrigerators, TVs, cell phones, batteries (NiCad, Lithium, automotive) and automotive products to name a few, offer very real and complicated concerns for solid waste management.

You'll find links in this section to organizations which promote and enhance waste reduction and recycling programs in the state of Georgia.

Citizen demand for recycling collection will continue to grow and local programs need to adapt and ensure they provide the most cost-effective collection programs.
What’s more, advances in recycling-separation technology and more flexible markets have put many local governments in a position to identify significant savings.

Under the Solid Wast Management Act, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) is charged with annual monitoring and reporting how the state solid waste management plan is progressing.
