Pure vanilla extract is a far better choice than imitation vanilla. The real thing comes from aromatic vanilla beans, which grow on one variety of orchid. Because of the labor-intensive, time-consuming process for obtaining the extract, vanilla is relatively expensive, but worth every penny.
