Dr. Oz talks predatory doctors with AJC

ATLANTA — The impact of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's groundbreaking investigation into abusive doctors continues to reverberate.

The Tuesday episode of "Dr. Oz," which airs on Channel 2 each day at 3 p.m., featured a segment with AJC Editor Kevin Riley discussing the investigation into how doctors who sexually abuse their patients go largely unpunished.

"There were doctors who had been sanctioned in Georgia for sexual violations, and most of them retained their licenses," Riley told Dr. Oz. "In only 10 states is the medical board required to report sexual misconduct to police."

The 2016 investigation examined how medical boards in all 50 states handle complaints of sex abuse by doctors. It found a broken culture in the medical profession that protects doctors and often makes it difficult for victims to file complaints.

The series has received several major national and regional awards, including the Philip Meyer Award and the Knight Award for Public Service. It was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Riley spoke with Dr. Oz about the impact that the story had on victims.

"We heard from so many victims that they appreciated that we brought this out, because they felt so alone," Riley told Dr. Oz.
