Thomas Haden Church To Play Villain In 'Spider-Man 3'

The critically acclaimed actor from the quirky road comedy "Sideways" is about to get caught up in Spider-Man's web.

Columbia Pictures announced Tuesday that Thomas Haden Church has been cast as the web-slinger's new archenemy in "Spider-Man 3."

The studio would not reveal yet which character Church would play.

"In addition to the on-going relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life," director Sam Raimi said in the announcement. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis and we all look forward to working with him."

Church was recently nominated for Best Supporting Actor for "Sideways," and also has had roles in "Spanglish," "George of the Jungle" and the television sitcom "Wings."

"Spider-Man 3" is set to open May 4, 2007. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will reprise their roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson, respectively.

The first two films in the "Spider-Man" franchise have grossed more than $1.5 billion in ticket sales worldwide.
