Fulton County police said Wednesday that they have filed a battery charge against singer Bobby Brown in connection with allegations that he beat superstar wife Whitney Houston last weekend during a domestic dispute.

Superstar Whitney Houston leaves the court following a hearing for her husband.

Brown, 34, has been charged with battery under the state's domestic violence law.

Houston told police Brown, 34, hit her in the face at their home in the Country Club of the South after an argument between the two escalated into a physical confrontation, a police spokesman said. She told police that Brown beat her after he "confronted" her when she returned home that evening.

According to the police report, Houston, 40, had a one-inch bruise on her cheek and a cut upper lip when police arrived at her home Sunday night.

Fulton County District Attorney spokesman Erik Friedly said the case had not been turned over to the office Wednesday. "I don't know what the situation is," he said.

Houston told police that Brown hit the left side of her face with an open right hand. He then went to the airport for a flight to Los Angeles, the Fulton County Police report said.

The singer was released from DeKalb County jail last August after serving nearly a week in jail in connection with probation violation charges that stemmed from a from a DUI arrest in 1996.
