LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The University of Kansas is about to start a course in creationism and intelligent design, but supporters of those concepts may not like it.Next semester's course in the religious studies department is titled "Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies.""The KU faculty has had enough," department Chairman Paul Mirecki said.Mirecki said intelligent design "clearly is not" science even though supporters try to paint it that way."The university's position is not an attack on anyone," KU Chancellor Bob Hemenway said in a statement. "We respect the right of the individual to his or her beliefs, including faith-based beliefs about creation. However, creationism and intelligent design are most appropriately taught in a religion, philosophy or sociology class, rather than a science class."Earlier this month, the Kansas Board of Education adopted new science teaching standards that treat evolution as a flawed theory. Science groups oppose that view. The vote was seen as a major victory for proponents of intelligent design, which says that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power.
