Sasha The Diva hosts KISS-A-Thon for Hosea Helps

Hosea Helps is a nonprofit organization helping Metro Atlanta families for 45 years, but as of July 1, Hosea Helps will be homeless, and their lease will not be renewed. As a result, the nonprofit is looking for a new home. The KISS-A-Thon to help raise money for that effort begins at 5 a.m. Friday July 7 and ends at 7 p.m. Both Sasha the Diva and Art Terrell will be broadcasting live from the Fulton County Atrium where the public is invited to donate to Hosea Helps in person from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The funds from the campaign will go toward purchasing a new warehouse and moving expenses.

Pre-Civil Rights park undergoes renovations in hopes of reviving history

Bartow County officials are working to uncover and showcase a local park's history. George Washington Carver State Park was Georgia's first state park open to people of color. The 300+ acre park was founded by John Loyd Atkinson, a World War II veteran, in 1950. Originally leased by the Army Corps of Engineers, budget cuts later resulted in the state handing over control of the park to Bartow County. The park has recently undergone major grant-funded renovations and the original park name has been restored. Event space reservations can be made by contacting the Cartersville-Bartow County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 770-387-1357.

Alternative Baseball Organization players participate in youth skills clinic

About two dozen teens and adults with autism and special needs participated in a youth skills clinic at SunTrust Park. The players are part of the Alternative Baseball Organization, a developmental baseball program that was started by a baseball lover who was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. The goal of the organization is to provide a social outlet, a place to compete and have fun, and an opportunity to improve baseball and softball skills.
