ATLANTA -- Hurricane Rita adds even more need by The Salvation Army and The American Red Cross for volunteers to donate cash gifts. You can help by donating online through a special effort being conducted by WSB-TV and WSB Radio.
Telethon Helps Katrina Victims
Greg Stone, representing Channel 2, WSB-TV and the WSB Radio Group, announced that the recent joint effort telethon raised over $3.3 million in cash donations for The Salvation Army and The American Red Cross.
"We can't thank the good people of Georgia enough for responding in such an overwhelming manner, with such acts of kindness and compassion for their fellow man," said Stone. "It's always heartwarming to be in the middle of the process, connecting people who want to help with those in need. I know that both the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army will make these donations count."
Tim English of the Red Cross and Major George Hoosier of The Salvation Army were on hand to thank the station, the phone bank volunteers and the tens of thousands of contributors for their part in the effort.
The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army desperately need cash in order to provide immediate help to victims, evacuees and refugees. Food, shelter and basic medical care are high on the list of those recovering from Hurricane Katrina both on the Gulf Coast and here in Georgia. People can still contribute online at wsbtv.com anytime.
Over the next two weeks, customers checking out at any participating Kroger store can request the clerk to "ROUND UP" their receipt as well as make a cash donation. Wachovia, Channel 2's "Family 2 Family" partner, has opened up a relief collection account. Anyone can make a donation at any participating Wachovia Financial Center.
