JDRF: Worldwide, Diabetes affects almost 200 million people, and that number is expected to double by the year 2030. Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease that can affect anyone at any age. The juvenile diabetes research foundation supports families coping with Type 1 diabetes, which usually strikes in childhood. One of those families is very near and dear to our hearts here at WSB Channel 2 and is being honored by the very organization it helped to create. So far, none of Kristina's children show any signs of Type 1 diabetes. There is an exciting new treatment on the horizon - it's called an artificial pancreas. It's not a cure, but it could possibly make a tremendous difference in the lives of people living with diabetes. And we want to congratulate John and Andrea Pruitt, recipients of the Juvenile diabetes research foundations Living and Giving Award. Lupus Foundation: What is Lupus? That question is said to be one of the top ten most googled questions on Google. Here's the answer: Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and tissue damage to virtually any organ in the body. More than 55 thousand Georgians are affected by this disease, yet it is one of the most misunderstood a misdiagnosed disease out there. While African American women of child bearing age are primarily affected, there are many faces of Lupus. Doctors speculate there may be a genetic component tied to Lupus. But there are those who have a family history of Lupus, but don't get the disease. There's still so much we don't know That’s why more funding for research is needed. Sickle Road Race/Walk: For nearly four decades, the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia has stood as a symbol of hope and help for those living with the disease. Today the Foundation continues its mission to provide education, screening and counseling to Sickle Cell patients. One of the ways it does that is through the Annual Sickle Cell Road Race. For the past three decades hundreds have come out to help break the Sickle Cycle and find a cure for sickle cell disease. This year's walk is sponsored by South Fulton running partners. One in every 400 African American has the disease, which is hereditary and many families all across North Georgia come together to raise money and awareness for the foundation. Sickle Cell is a blood disease where the red blood cells are shaped similar to a banana, when they really should be shaped more like a donut. And because of the shape of those cells, blood vessels and blood circulation are impacted, which makes for very painful symptoms. But there is hope. Help break the Sickle Cycle by participating in the 30th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race. It's Saturday, April 11 from 9AM - Noon at Welcome all Park in College Park. For more information visit the website at www.sicklega.org.

Ready GA Campaign : This is the first weekend of spring, but one year ago this month our state experienced a system of severe storms and tornadoes. In two days, a total of 45 tornadoes pushed through the south, 11 of them touching down right there in Georgia. One in particular cut through downtown Atlanta, leaving behind millions of dollars in damages. Do you remember what you were doing when that storm touched down? Experts say most don't. And they also warn, if it happens again 8 out 10 of us won't be ready. The promotion, which again is sponsored by Ready Georgia, WSB and Kroger, started last week and runs through April 30. Several organizations around the world are working to build a future where human needs are met in harmony with nature. One of those organizations is right here in Georgia. Civil Rights Digital Library: Their stories are historical. Ordinary men and women who challenged the nation to apply its founding values of justice, life, liberty and pursuit of happiness to all citizens, regardless of skin color. The Civil Rights Movement is among the most far-reaching social movements in our nation's history. Still, there's a generation out there whose primary connection to this historical era is limited to movies, television and history books. Imagine then, if hours of raw, un-edited, never-before-seen video clips, photographs, even FBI files were as accessible as your home computer. Well now, it is.
