NCAA Game Summary - Georgia Vs. Florida
Saturday, October 29, 2005
Jacksonville, FL -- Chris Leak threw a touchdown pass and also rushed for a score, as the 16th-ranked Florida Gators held on to beat fourth- ranked Georgia 14-10 in the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" at Alltell Stadium. Leak completed 15 of his 20 passes for 108 yards and no interceptions for Florida (6-2, 4-2 SEC), which won despite not scoring after its second possession. DeShawn Wynn rushed for 109 yards on 19 carries and Tate Casey had three catches for 21 yards and a TD, as the Gators improved their record to 14-2 against the Bulldogs in their last 16 meetings. "We knew we had to come into this game and play, Georgia is a great team," said Casey. "For us, it's where we want to be, it puts us in good contention for the SEC Championship." Georgia (7-1, 5-1), which could have clinched a spot in the SEC title game with a victory, was playing without starting quarterback D.J. Shockley, who suffered a left knee injury in last week's 23-20 win over Arkansas. His replacement, Joe Tereshinski, was just 8-of-21 for 100 yards through the air, but did catch a touchdown pass from running back Thomas Brown and also rushed for 37 yards. Danny Ware had 71 yards on the ground for the Bulldogs, and Brown rushed for 54 yards. Trailing 14-3 after a dominant first-half performance by Florida, the Bulldogs deployed a trick play to cut the lead to four with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter. Facing a 2nd-and-7 on the Gators' nine yard-line, Tereshinski pitched left to Brown before sprinting out to the right and stumbling to the ground. The signal-caller regained his footing and leapt over a defender to haul in Brown's underthrown pass, then stretched the ball over the goal line. Florida responded with a little trickery of its own, as Eric Wilbur broke off a 20-yard run on a punt fake to convert a 4th-and-2 on the ensuing possession. Georgia's defense still managed to deny the Gators and the Bulldog offense charged right back down the field. Brandon Coutu's 52-yard field goal attempt hit off the upright, however, for his second miss of the second half. The Georgia defense held once again and the Bulldogs got the ball back one last time with a little over three minutes to play. Tereshinski got his team near midfield but was leveled on a 4th-and-11 pass attempt by Jeremy Mincey, who forced the incompletion. Florida claimed possession and ran out the clock to win the game. "Once the game started we buckled down and played better in the second half on both sides," said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. "We missed some makeable field goals but overall our fight and spirit was commendable." Florida scored on its first two possessions to assume a 14-0 lead. The Gators mounted a 13-play, 80-yard drive on their first offensive series that consumed six minutes of play clock. Wynn broke off an eight-yard run to move his team deep into Georgia territory, and Leak capped things off with a three-yard TD scamper. Florida then forced a Bulldog punt, which Vernell Brown returned 29 yards to the Georgia 41. Four plays later, Leak found Casey in the back of the end zone for a one-yard touchdown completion with 6:09 remaining in the first quarter. Coutu booted a 31-yard field goal early in the second to put Georgia on the board. Tereshinski converted a 3rd-and-3 with a 20-yard run off the right end, then hit Leonard Pope for a 17-yard pickup to move the Bulldogs into Florida territory. The drive stalled at the 14 yard-line and Coutu put it through the uprights to make it 14-3. The Gators were poised to increase their lead late in the half, but a bad exchange between Leak and Wynn led to a fumble with under a minute to play. Georgia recovered on its own five-yard line then ran out the clock to avoid further damage.Game Notes:This was the 83rd meeting between these two teams, 73 of which have been held in Jacksonville...Florida and Georgia first met in 1915, and have played one another each year since 1926 with the exception of the 1943 season, when the Gators did not field a team...Georgia leads the all-time series 45-36-2...Florida coach Urban Meyer is the first coach in Gator history to defeat two teams ranked No. 4 or higher in his first season. Florida beat Tennessee 16-7 on September 17, when the Volunteers were ranked fourth.
