'Ridgemont High' Produced Oscar Winners, A-List Stars

Nobody could hardly imagine that 27 years ago, the actor who played stoner surfer Jeff Spicoli in the comedy classic "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" would go on to win an Oscar, let alone two, sometime in his career.

Sean Penn's ability to transform himself into a different array of characters not only proved why he won Best Actor Oscars for "Mystic River" and "Milk," respectively; its clearly the reason that long blond-haired surfer dude Spicoli remains an icon of pop culture in the two-plus decades since the role.

But much as Penn had a presence in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," he was merely one in a talented cast of ensemble characters in the 1982 comedy hit. Based on the book and screenplay by Rolling Stone writer-turned-filmmaker Cameron Crowe, "Fast Times" followed multiple storylines set in and around a group of eclectic characters in a South California high school.

Among the stars were Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brad Backer and Robert Romanus as a group of teens coming of age, and Ray Walston and Vincent Schiavelli as two of the school's eccentric teachers.

Also among the "students" in the class of Ridgemont High was another future Oscar winner in Forrest Whitaker, who brought the pain to his opponents as the school's football hero, and a few other then-lesser-known actors who went on to become A-list stars.
